Paolo Duterte Resigns as Vice Mayor of Davao City

Effective December 25, 2017, Paolo Duterte has made the announcement of his resignation as the Davao City Vice Mayor during a special session of the city council.

Last October Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte himself said he planned to retire from politics in 2019 with the possibility of different tandem "Carpio-Duterte" in the next local elections.

However, it became so early to tender his resignation because of some incidents that triggered him to decide.

First, the "smuggling of P6.4-billion worth of shabu" from China through the Bureau of Customs, where his name was dragged. And the recent, his "very public squabble with my daughter" from his first marriage.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, the sister of the vice mayor, said the Majority Floor Leader Bernard Al-ag would be acting vice mayor until the City Council accepts Paolo's resignation. After that, they will follow the Local Government Code's rule on succession, where Mabel Acosta as the Number 1 councilor in the 2016 election will take over the vice mayorship. Here's the resignation letter:

Paolo Duterte shakes hands and hugs people at the Davao City council hall. He thanked the council and said, "I look forward to the day that I will be able to serve our country again."
